Heikki Erola is a contemporary painter based in Athens, Greece. His work is primarily abstract, combining organic forms, expressive movement and a strong interest in colour and the physical qualities of paint.
His paintings have taken different directions over the years, from energetic, gestural compositions to more restrained works and richly textured surfaces. Although the visual language changes, his approach remains intuitive, allowing each painting to develop without a predetermined image or message.
Artist statement
I have always painted. It is part of me, and something I have always felt the need to do.
I rarely plan a painting in advance. I respond to what happens on the canvas, allowing colours, forms and movements to emerge, change or disappear. Sometimes a painting develops quickly; at other times, it takes a long time before it finds its form.
I don't consciously try to tell stories or communicate particular ideas through my paintings. But they may reflect something of my state of mind, my experiences and the different stages of my life. In that sense, each painting becomes a record of a particular moment.
